5 out of 5 stars Likely as good as canned mackerel gets.   January 25, 2009

I just started getting back into fish as I'm trying to lose weight and eat better. I remember my father eating canned mackerel when I was a child, and every now and again he would let me have some. I remembered liking it, so now much later in life I went looking for the best canned mackerel I could find.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the can and saw four complete full-can-length pieces of mackerel. Not too fishy and rather tasty. I ate them on a toasted English muffin with chive and onion cream cheese, and microwaved about ten seconds to take the chill off the fish. Then I didn't have to think about food for several hours.

These are delicious. The fillets are in large pieces and not packed in oil. Instead they are surrounded by a juice from the canning process. Mackerel is very good for you, low in mercury, and sustainably harvested. They also have omega-three fatty acids. An excellent fish choice all around.

We serve them on lightly buttered toast with thinly sliced shallots and some lemon.

This is a high quality product that makes an economical dinner. Try it!

After researching what are some of the healthiest fish is to eat I found Bar Harbor Smoked Mackeral one of the best on the market. The product is from fairly unpolluted, local waters and the smoked flavor is done just right.

Living in the Pacific Northwest it's near impossible to get fresh Smoked Mackerel. So, I searched for the next best thing -- tinned Smoked Mackerel -- After a trip back to the UK @ Christmas I was missing my Smoked Mackerel Pate. Well! I'm a happy bunny now -- I've got my fix! Here's my really quick recipe: In a medium sized pudding bowl melt ~2 Tablespoons of BUTTER (little less if you are trying to cut the calories). Next chop up ~3 Tablespoons of FRESH ORGANIC PARSLEY (I like a lot of parsley, so you can cut back or not use at all if you're not a parsley fan). Add the TIN OF SMOKED MACKEREL (minus the juice) to the butter and mush up using a fork -- add about 1/2 teaspoon of DRIED CORIANDER and BLACK PEPPER. Next add ~1 Tablespoon of Non-Fat PLAIN GREEK YOGURT -- Mix Well and add a good squeeze of half LEMON (go easy tho' -- the lemon can give too much of kick if you add too much) -- Voila! Put in fridge to cool if you can wait that long.

This product is a welcome surprise. Great while watching athletic events on TV or as an appetizer. Just as good as mackerel sushi.
